Nugent brace cages the Wolves Wolves 1-3 Preston North End
Images
from Wolves here What’s that song called? “Oh what a night”…..
as Preston North End secured their first win of the season, against
a much fancied Wolves side, in front of the watching nation.

The North End kit flag at
Wolves Paul Simpson took his North End squad to
another of the big boys of the Championship, only three days
after falling short against
Norwich City. The Sky Sports cameras we’re in attendance,
which resulted in a poor attendance.
Kelvin Wilson stepped into the team, following
Graham Alexander’s
sending off at Carrow Road. Danny Dichio came back into the team
after a hip injury. Paul McKenna was handed the captain’s
arm band in place of Grezza.
 A
not so packed Molineux North End, playing in all white fell behind when Wolves took the
lead after 14 minutes. Jay Bothroyd raced past Liam Chilvers to
nip in and somehow beat Carlo Nash at his near post. This was a
horrible goal to concede, after a bright start.
Preston we’re clearly on top through
out the first half, Wolves only creating the chance which Bothroyd
scored from. The
Preston fans were cheering every pass made from the Lilywhites,
as the Wolves team and fans started to get frustrated.
Simpson’s men got their just rewards when Nugent fired home
Preston’s and his first goal of the season. The goal came
via a Danny Pugh corner which wasn’t cleared by Wolves. Sean
St. Ledger went for goal himself but his miss hit shot was sensationally
volley in by David Nugent.
North End rallied on for the rest of the first half, Nugent causing
the aging Wolves back line all sorts of problems. The first half
came to an exiting end, Preston finishing the first 45 well on
top. Paul Simpson must have asked for more of the same from his
players, which he certainly did.
Preston kept hold of the ball well, playing some good attacking
football. Wolves only looked like scoring on the break, but the
new look Preston defence of Wilson, St Ledger, Chilvers and Hill
all played out of their skin.
The 200 or so Preston fans we’re sent
into raptures when David Nugent grabbed his brace and fired North
End into the lead.
Nugent picked up a loose ball deep into the Wolves half. The fiery
scouser ran at the defence, beating a few on the way. Nugent coolly
side footed the ball home with his left foot, leaving the keeper
with no chance.
This was nothing less that Preston deserved, it was such a change
from the poor performance against Norwich. Jason Jarrett and Paul
McKenna ran the midfield all night, again playing to their full
potential. Simon Whaley was ripping the Wolves left back to shreds
with his sheer pace and skill.
Danny Dichio, another player who did his part came off for Chris
Sedgwick. Whaley moved up front along side Nugent. Patrick Agyemang
made a bow, replacing two-goal hero David Nugent. The clock was
running down for Wolves, with North End holding on firm.
Simpson’s tactic to move Whaley up front paid off dividend
when he hit Preston’s third and final goal. Whaley picked
up the ball towards the left flank, the former Bury man cut inside,
dummying the ball twice before belting the ball home with a rasping
shot.
This was amazing scenes, the Preston fans
sent into party mode. Whaley’s goal came in the 90th minute,
giving Wolves no chance of any comeback. This was a brilliant
performance from the whites,
something to build on in the near future.
